PROJECT TEAM
Cristina Poleacovschi, PhD
Dr. Cristina Poleacovschi is an assistant professor of civil engineering at Iowa State University. Her research focuses on equity issues related to diverse infrastructure systems. Her work also focuses on engineering education, particularly on incorporating social justice material and assessment tools. Katy Swalwell, PhD
Dr. Katy Swalwell is a former associate professor of social and cultural studies in education. She currently facilitates professional development and writes curriculum through her company, Past Present Future Consulting & Media. Dr. Swalwell co-developed the theoretical framework for the project and helped create the GO DEEP curriculum. Mollie Appelgate, PhD
Dr. Mollie Appelgate is an associate professor in the School of Education at Iowa State University. She teaches mathematics, science, and technology methods classes to future teachers. As a former civil engineer and current education professor, she used her expertise to help create and refine the curriculum, with special focus on integrating more student voice into the lessons Toby Nelson, PhD Candidate
Toby Nelson is a PhD candidate at Iowa State University, specializing in research on water insecurity and critical pedagogical theories in engineering education. With a deep commitment to addressing water-related challenges, Toby aims to contribute to sustainable water resource management and equitable access to clean water. Additionally, Toby's interest in critical pedagogical theories drives their exploration of innovative approaches to teaching and learning within the engineering field. Through his research and academic pursuits, Toby Nelson aspires to create a positive impact by informing policy decisions, shaping educational practices, and inspiring future engineers to tackle societal issues with empathy and creativity. Joshua Mensah-Larkai, Graduate Research Assistant
Joshua Mensah-Larkai is currently pursuing a PhD in Iowa State University with research in Critical consciousness and Social Justice. He is profoundly passionate about sustainable engineering and water resource management, showcasing a commitment to integrating sustainability in modern engineering solutions. Beyond academics and professional endeavors, Joshua carries a fervent passion for volunteering, reflecting his commitment to giving back to the community and making a positive impact. About Critical Consciousness Survey Tool In order to assess the effectiveness of the GO DEEP curriculum, the project team modified and validated a version of the Critical Consciousness Scale. Developed Matthew A. Diemer, Luke J. Rapa, Catalina J. Park, and Justin C. Perry (2017), this tool assesses people’s critical reflection related to perceived inequality and egalitarianism as well as critical action related to sociopolitical perception.
